The European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress 2024, one of the world’s leading events in respiratory medicine, was held from 7–11 September in Vienna, Austria. Bringing together thousands of healthcare professionals, researchers, and industry leaders, the congress once again served as a global platform for advancing knowledge and innovation in respiratory care.
This year’s congress attracted participants from more than 160 countries and featured hundreds of scientific sessions, symposia, and abstract presentations covering the full spectrum of respiratory diseases. The hybrid format allowed both in-person and online participation, ensuring wider accessibility and engagement across the global respiratory community.
A key highlight of ERS 2024 was its central theme, “Humans and Machines: getting the balance right,” which explored the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in respiratory medicine. Discussions focused on how these innovations can enhance clinical decision-making, improve diagnostic accuracy, and optimize patient outcomes while maintaining a strong human-centered approach to care.
The congress also addressed major global health challenges, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung infections, and the long-term impact of COVID-19. Emerging topics such as environmental health, air pollution, and sustainability were widely explored, reflecting their increasing relevance in respiratory research and practice.
ERS 2024 provided a valuable opportunity for networking, collaboration, and knowledge exchange among professionals from diverse disciplines. With its comprehensive scientific program and strong emphasis on innovation, the congress reinforced its position as a cornerstone event shaping the future of respiratory medicine worldwide.
